Painting at Mona Vale Market Day

Pomegranates and Pears, 76 x 61cm, oil on canvas ©Galloway Brown

I don't get a chance to paint with an artist friend very often in public but a day that started a little nerve wracking ended up being a whole lot of fun! Thanks to my friend Mignon Parker who is a seasoned pro when it comes to public still life demonstrations.

We quickly got into drawing up the still life in front of us. Here I'm drawing up in charcoal on a oil tinted background. Mignon prefers to work on a black background and in acrylic. Once we were happy with our drawings I started to block in my larger shapes with a large brush trying to get as much of canvas covered as possible in a short time, then I'll progress in layers and finally glazing. So I usually get the drawing and a good colour pass in the first day.

It was an opportunity to connect with the public and have them ask questions so we got to meet some lovely people. We will have to arrange to do another one soon.
