'To Hell and Back'

Details: Charcoal on paper, 74 x 90cm

To Hell and back is a charcoal drawing depicting an exhausted, emotional, blackened firefighter emerging from the smoke, ash and embers. This is Alan, who is one of the youngest in the brigade and has been a member for 2 years. With this drawing I wanted to portray a sense of soldiers returning from the battlefield. This is one of the last drawings of the firefighters as I move on to a new commission.

Selected as finalist Mortimore Art Prize 2009.
